In stockWhich PondoVac?
- PondoVac Classic: compact, with a 27 litre tank that switches on and empties automatically. Reaches 2 m deep.
- PondoVac 3 and 4: two chambers fill and empty in turn, so suction never pauses. The PondoVac 4 adds hand control of the suction power and reaches 2.4 m deep.
- PondoVac 5: a built-in drainage pump for non-stop suction that pumps the dirty water away, even uphill. Reaches 2.5 m deep.
All four can also be used as a wet vacuum at home, and the PondoVac 3, 4 and 5 have transport wheels.

Questions about pond vacuums & cleaning
How do I prepare my pond for winter?
One autumn afternoon's work keeps a pond healthy through winter and makes spring easier.
- Net the pond before leaves start to fall. The same net also keeps herons off your fish.
- Cut back plants. Remove dying leaves and spent growth before the first frost. Marginal plants can be trimmed to a few cm above the water.
- Clear the bottom. Vacuum or scoop out sludge now so less rots over winter. A pond vacuum like the OASE PondoVac is the quickest way.
- Clean the filter sponges in pond water (not under the tap).
- Switch off the UV clarifier to save bulb hours: algae barely grow in cold water.
- Reduce feeding as water temperature drops, and stop entirely below 10 °C (see when should I stop feeding my fish?).
- Fit an ice preventer or aerator if the pond is likely to freeze over, so gases can still exchange.
Come spring, replace the UV bulb, start feeding again as water passes 10 °C, and clean the filter sponges once more.
How do I get rid of sludge at the bottom of my pond?
Sludge is rotted leaves, uneaten food and fish waste. A thin layer is harmless, but a thick layer uses up oxygen, feeds algae and smells bad.
Three ways to deal with it:
- Pond vacuum. The quickest. The OASE PondoVac range sucks sludge off the bottom with the water and fish still in. Autumn and spring are the best times to run one.
- Biological sludge remover. Bacterial treatments break the organic matter down over a few weeks. Best used in warm weather when the bacteria are active.
- Net it out by hand. Fine for small ponds. Scoop gently with a fine mesh net so you're not stirring the whole pond up.
Prevent build-up by netting the pond in autumn before leaves fall, feeding fish only what they finish in five minutes, and running a surface skimmer if the pond collects debris.
